Flood emergency extended for McCaysville and Copperhill after overnight flooding

A flash flood emergency remains in effect for McCaysville, Georgia, and nearby Copperhill, Tennessee, after overnight flooding led to water rescues and evacuations. The National Weather Service’s 8:57 a.m. EST update on November 5 extended the emergency until 11 a.m. EST.

The warning covers north-central Fannin County in Georgia and southeastern Polk County in Tennessee. Its message is especially important if the rain has eased: flooding can remain dangerous even when no additional rain is expected.

What the latest warning says

The National Weather Service bulletin describes serious flooding around McCaysville. It urges people in the affected area to move to higher ground, avoid travel except for evacuation, and never drive onto flooded roads.

The 11 a.m. time is the expiry listed in that update, not a guarantee that roads or buildings become safe at that moment. Check subsequent NWS warnings and local officials’ instructions before making travel decisions.

Two communities on the state line

McCaysville and Copperhill sit on opposite sides of the Georgia–Tennessee boundary. CNN’s reporting describes flooding, rescues and evacuations in the area. An Associated Press report also documents overnight water rescues.

This is a local emergency in the northern Georgia and southern Tennessee border area. Conditions elsewhere in either state can differ, so use the warning for your exact location rather than a statewide weather headline.

If you are travelling nearby

Follow evacuation instructions from local authorities and keep clear of flooded roads. Do not treat a break in rainfall, an earlier forecast or an expired social-media post as confirmation that a route has reopened.
