A Korean corn dog is a snack on a stick, coated in batter and fried until crisp. In Korea, look for the word 핫도그 (hot dog). The filling can be sausage, cheese, or a combination of both. Some versions have pieces of potato or breadcrumbs on the outside, adding another layer of crunch.
At a stall, the choice starts with the filling. A cheese-only version may stretch when pulled apart; a sausage-and-cheese version gives you both. Potato-coated versions are often called 감자핫도그 (gamja hot dog), with gamja meaning potato. Sugar, ketchup and mustard are common finishing options, but the choices depend on the vendor.
In English, the snack is often called a “Korean corn dog.” Batter recipes vary, so do not assume every Korean-style version uses cornmeal or contains the same ingredients. If you have an allergy or avoid meat, ask about the filling, batter and shared fryer before ordering. Let the snack cool a little: the filling can be very hot.
